What are the threats to biodiversity?
Threats to biodiversity:
Any process or event, whether natural or human-induced, that is likely to cause adverse effects on the status or sustainable use of any component of biodiversity is referred to as a threat.

Habitat threat
Habitat is a natural place and part of the environment where plants, animals, or other organisms live. For example, the terrestrial vegetation type may be forest, desert grassland, or freshwater habitat, which includes streams, rivers, and lakes. Marine habitat includes salt marshes, open sea, sea bed, and deep water.
Habitat alteration
It is a change in land use or land cover that has an impact on the local ecosystem.
It may lead to habitat loss, which is the greatest current threat to living organisms.
Large areas of land and water are damaged by human activities such as overfishing and urbanization.
Destruction of habitat results in the loss of species. threats to biodiversity:

Types of habitat destruction:
There are two main types of habitat destruction.
i) Habitat fragmentation
ii) Degradation
Habitat fragmentation:-
When habitat is broken up into fragments or pieces, this is called habitat fragmentation. For example, a road could cut the area of habitat in half and cause a lack of resources for species.
Habitat degradation:
The process by which the beauty or quality of a habitat is destroyed is called habitat degradation. The climate is changing due to the degradation of habitat.
For examples:-
- Absence of fish and water.
- Loss of beauty from the environment due to the destruction of flower species.
Causes of degradation:
1-Deforestation
2-Chemical influence
3-Unplanned construction
4: Effective agricultural policies; secondary pollutants
2. Overuse of vehicles
Effects of degradation:
There are the following effects of habitat degradation:
1. Depletion of natural resources
2-Wildlife extinction
3. Formation of acid rain
4: Destruction of biodiversity
5- Pollution
6: Reduction in the natural quality of the water system
Species altering the habitat
i) Pathogens:
A chestnut blight is a fungus that kills chestnut trees. It results in the destruction of moths due to chestnut tree destruction.
ii)- Predation:
Brown tree snakes were introduced to the Pacific Ocean, which wiped out 3/4 of native bird and lizard species.
iii) Competition for resources:
Zebra mussels are an invasive species. It can compete with native species for food and space. Invasive species provide space and food for native mussel species.
